According to World Health Organization rules, all healthy people can donate blood voluntarily. However, some conditions can lead to confusion about blood donation. So it is important to know the rules and regulations before donating blood.

Blood contains blood cells, platelets, and plasma. Doctors say that all these three things can be used from one unit of blood. In other words, one unit of blood can save the lives of three people.

If you want a blood donor, you can donate whole blood or whole blood, or you can donate special blood components such as platelets.

Blood contains seven percent of the total body weight. Typically, one unit of blood is taken from one’s body at a time. This blood is regenerated in the donor’s body within a few weeks. Not only that, it does not cause any harm to the donor.

However, no one can donate blood even if they want to. Also, if the blood group is wrong, it can range from serious physical problems to death. According to a report in the media, there are several rules for donating blood. Let’s find out-

1. If the donor has an infectious or blood-borne illness, he or she cannot donate blood.

2. Blood transfusions are prohibited for AIDS, heart disease, hypertension, cancer, epilepsy, kidney disease, and diabetes. Those who have anemia are also prohibited from donating blood. If the hemoglobin is below 12.5, then blood cannot be given. If the pulse rate is less than 50 and above 100, blood is not taken. Also, blood is not taken if you have asthma, tuberculosis, or any type of allergy.

3. The age of the donor should be between 18 to 65 years. Blood transfusion is prohibited if the weight is not less than 50 kg. When giving blood, the body temperature should be 36.5 degrees Celsius. Blood pressure should be systolic 100–160, diastolic 50–100.

4. Blood cannot be donated even if tattoos or piercings are done within six months before blood donation.

5. Blood donation should be done at least six months after rabies, hepatitis B vaccine. However, some doctors believe that blood can be donated two to three weeks after the covid vaccine.

6. Alcohol should not be consumed within 24 hours before donating blood.

7. Women who are pregnant or new mothers cannot donate blood. Also, blood donation is prohibited within six months of miscarriage.
